Amy Coté

I am a PhD student in the department of English at the University of Toronto, where I study theology and the Victorian novel. My PhD research deals with questions of religion across public and private spheres in the nineteenth century as people attempted to negotiate a plurality of religious beliefs in uniquely modern ways. I hope to continue to communicate this research both within academia and outside, as I see many parallels between Victorian questions of faith and our own multicultural and in many ways post-secular society.
This past fall, I was lucky enough to work on an election campaign in a riding with two astonishing women candidates (University-Rosedale). This experience helped me to realize how important it is for women in Canada to see themselves represented in elections and in every level of government. I hope that through the woman in house program I will learn about how community outreach and academic research can better encourage women’s involvement in public life.
